Planning for 2024 Planting

We are still a few months away from planting, but it’s never too early to start planning. We asked some of our Seed Specialists about the 2024 forecast… weather, commodity prices, the market. What is everyone thinking about right now?

“A lot of guys are concerned with commodity prices being down from a year ago, so it all comes down to bushels… get as many as you can get to offset your input prices. Work with your Seed Specialist to get the top performing variety for your farm and give yourself the best return on your investment. “Farmers have a lot of time to think right now. It’s a great time to think about the business end and position yourself in the right place! Start penciling things out, see where the market is presently, and watch to see what the markets do in February and March.” – Randy Smith, Seed Specialist

“It’s ok to start thinking about planting. Be ready to roll, but only when the time is right. If the conditions are right, plant early, but don’t push it just to get it done.” – David Woodruff, Seed Specialist

“A lot of people are having a tough time making the decision of corn vs soybeans for 2024. Should they stay where they’re at or go with more corn or more beans? We’re all concerned with commodity prices getting lower. On a positive note, we’re having good moisture in Tennessee this winter! Our water table is getting picked back up from the dry fall we had. Everybody’s starting to talk about the Louisville Farm Show too, we’re only two weeks away!” – Steve Miller, Seed Specialist
